Art as a tool for social transformation.

“Sembrando Creatividad” is a community educational art program that unites arts, letters, psychology and social work. It promotes the integral development (intellectual, emotional, social and motor) in children, adolescents and women, who live in situations of social vulnerability. The program arose in 2010 from the conviction that the arts have a great capacity for healing and transformation. In this sense, we have observed over the years that the program participants feel more content and self-confident. Their self-esteem increases. They also learn to communicate what they feel and think, and improve cooperation and interaction between them.

The New York University – specifically the McSilver Institute for Poverty Policy and Research – evaluated the Program for two years. It concluded that the program supports the development of social and socio-emotional skills, improving participants behaviour, expression and exploration capacities, and persistence in the face of difficulties.

Methodology.

The program consists of the implementation of weekly workshops of visual art during after school hours.

The workshops include three stages. First, they include a moment of group play and icebreaker (stories, images of artists, guided meditations) from which the theme to be worked on is introduced. Second, they incorporate a stage in which participants work with specific artistic materials and techniques. Finally, there is a closing stage in which participants share what they have been working on, describing this by the use of words or some other dynamic method. There is also a moment of self-evaluation where the youth themselves record what they think and feel about what happened. Finally, the team of professionals carry out a subsequent evaluation of the workshop in general and of each participant in particular. Based on that, the next workshop is re-planned.

The workshops are complemented with open workshops, mural painting, cultural outings and special workshops with artists, generating a dialogue between the art world and children/youth. An exhibition is held at the end of the year in which the children’s works are displayed. This represents a closing event and recognition of the work done during the year.

"The first task of education is to agitate life, but leave it free for it to develop."
María Montessori - (1870-1952) Italian educator and doctor.
